A colleague of mine mentioned this book to me a while ago and I wanted to suggest it to you again. It’s light, inspirational reading about people who have turned their hobbies and passions into careers. It’s called The Escape Artists: True Stories of People Who Turned Their Obsessions Into Professions, by Joshua Piven.
When you’re thinking about your passions/hobbies and which ones you can turn into a job, versus which ones are just personal, ask yourself if you will happy doing it all day, every day, without losing interest in it. Whether your passion is photography, financial analysis, helping others, etc. I’ve had people tell me sailing is their passion, but to work on a sailboat would make it a chore and not a passion any longer. Others have said, “I love coaching softball so much, I want to do it full time.” It all depends on you.
What do you want your life to look like and where does your passion belong? Does it belong in the professional category or the personal?
