Starting a new job is exciting, and it can be scary as well. I find that people are on a high when they accept the offer because it’s thrilling to have a new opportunity. Once they start on that first day, their nerves start to kick in (understandably) and the reality sets in that they have a learning curve. This is true of any job, and the best way to manage those nerves and that learning curve is to have a plan.
Here are some of the top things you should do to ensure a smooth and successful transition into a new role, whether it’s at your existing company or a new one.
1. Understand expectations. What does your employer expect of you, including your direct boss and the company in general. How does your job fit into the bigger picture of the company and its goals? If you don’t know, ask! Find out what the one month, three month and six month plan or goals are for your role and your department if you don’t already know.
2. Find out how you will be measured in your performance. What criteria will they use, and how often will you have a review? What are the three critical accomplishments you need to have made in your first six months. Again, ask if you don’t already know.
3. Make a list of the things you need to learn or improve, in terms of your skills or experience. Write them down and in your next meeting with your boss. Discuss a plan to achieve those goals.
4. Set a tone right away for open communication with your boss and co-workers. This will help ensure success. Let them know you welcome feedback, set up regular meetings with the appropriate people as needed and communicate with them directly so they know it is okay to do that with you as well.
Keep the excitement alive in your new position by having a plan for the transition! It will help your motivation level as well as help you achieve your goals.
